UPDATED: CJN swears in 68 new SANs
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, administered the oath of office to 68 legal professionals as Senior Advocates of Nigeria during the 2026/2027 Legal Year ceremony.
The Nigerian Television Authority disseminated this information through a news bulletin posted on its official X account on Monday, accompanied by photographs and video footage from the event.
This swearing-in ceremony occurred following the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee's approval of the 68 candidates approximately three months prior.
The committee granted their elevation during its 174th plenary meeting, which was presided over by Kekere-Ekun.
According to a communiqué released by Kabir Eniola, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, the newly appointed SANs consist of 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, as reported by Tribune.
Obiaraeri received recognition for his "scholarly contributions to the legal field, establishing him as the sole academic recipient among the 68 honorees."
The designation of Senior Advocate of Nigeria represents one of the most prestigious professional honors within Nigeria's legal profession.
This distinction is bestowed upon legal professionals who demonstrate the requisite standards of professional excellence in either advocacy or legal scholarship.
Prior to the conferment, the LPPC "mandated that successful candidates must participate in and successfully complete a compulsory orientation program, with scheduling details to be communicated at a future date."
The committee further instructed the newly elevated SANs to adhere to paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023.
It cautioned against "disseminating or facilitating advertisements, congratulatory communications or commendatory notices pertaining to their nomination or elevation, noting that non-compliance could result in disciplinary action."
