Edo varsity lecturer dies after encounter with sex worker
A senior lecturer employed at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, an institution owned by Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, collapsed and died in a hotel room following an alleged intimate encounter with a 21-year-old individual engaged in commercial sex work, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The occurrence took place on Sunday at a hotel located in the Mosco district of Ekpoma, situated within the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Accounts indicate that the academic professional had registered at the hotel with the sex worker and expired shortly after the encounter.
On Tuesday, the Edo State Police Command's Spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, provided confirmation of the incident and reported that three individuals have been apprehended in relation to the matter.
She stated, "On October 5, 2026, at approximately 8 pm, the command received notification that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had registered at a hotel in Ekpoma and procured the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
"He subsequently instructed the woman to obtain water for him, and upon her return, she discovered him deceased in the room."
Ikoedem indicated that the proprietor of the hotel, its manager, and the sex worker are presently in police custody pending the completion of investigations. The deceased's body, she noted, has been transferred to the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
In a related development, the university's Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, verified to PM News that Uwuigbe was employed by the institution; however, he clarified that the incident transpired beyond the university's premises.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he told the News outlet.
